Privacy Policy

Pique ("we", "our", "us") is an app for couples. Version 2.0 has Daily Thread (a question a day for the two of you), Couples Journey (question chapters you play together), games for two (Who's More Likely To and PDA Comfort Check), the Anniversary countdown and Sparks. This policy explains what data we collect, why, how long we keep it, and your rights.

Earlier versions of Pique (1.0.x) also have two group games for friends, Roast Mode and Open Book. If you still use one of those versions, also read Earlier versions of Pique (1.0.x) below.

Summary

We collect the minimum the features need: your display name, avatar, your couple record and your game state.
Most of what you tell Pique about the two of you stays on your phone.
We do not collect your location, advertising identifiers or anything about you beyond what the features require.
We never sell your data. There are no ads in Pique.
You can ask for a copy of your data, or delete your account at any time from within the app.

What we collect

Identity and sign-in

Guest (anonymous) account — created automatically when you start, via Firebase Authentication. This is a random ID used to associate your data with you. No personal identity attached.
Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In (optional) — if you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, we receive a unique identifier from that provider. If your provider shares your email address or name, Firebase Authentication may store them solely so you can sign back in with the same account. We do not use your email address for marketing.
Display name and avatar — chosen by you during setup. Stored in your profile so your partner, and the other player in a game room, can see them.
Avatar photo (optional) — if you add a profile photo, it is stored as a small compressed image in your profile. Not shared outside the people you link or play with.

Your couple (Daily Thread link)

Couple record — when you link with your partner, we store a "couple record" containing both your identifiers, display names and avatars, your question schedule (days, time and time zone), streak counts, Grace Days balance, and two values from About us: your relationship stage and conversation style.
Anniversary dates — you can save up to three dates in the Anniversary countdown. Each date has a type (got together, first met, got married) or a name you type yourself (up to 40 characters), plus how you count it (every 100 days, every month or every year) and a colour. The dates are stored on your device. If you are linked with your partner, they are also stored on your couple record so you both see the same dates. The reminder the day before is scheduled on your device; we do not send it from our servers.

Daily Thread

Your daily answer — your own answer is stored locally on your device. A copy is scrambled on your device before upload and written to Firebase so your partner's device can unscramble and display it during the reveal. Firebase security rules limit access to you and your partner, and we do not read your answers.
Deletion from our servers — about 2 hours after you both reveal, the answer text is deleted from our servers. If only one of you answers and the reveal never happens, it is deleted after about 7 days.
Reveal history — past questions and answers are stored locally on your device for up to 365 days so your History screen can show them.

Couples Journey and games for two

Rooms — when you play Couples Journey, or Who's More Likely To or PDA Comfort Check on two phones, we store a temporary room in Firebase Realtime Database: the room code, the two players (ID, display name, avatar), the game state and your answers. Every room has a two-hour expiry: it is deleted, with every answer, by a scheduled cleanup job that runs every 30 minutes.
One-phone games — games played on one phone stay on that phone.
AI scoring — text answers in Couples Journey are scored by Anthropic (see Third-party services). Names are removed first. To prevent abuse, we keep a daily count of scoring requests for each account.
Game history (your device only) — when a game ends, a short summary (game or chapter name, score, duration and date) is saved on your device so History can list your past games. No names and no answers. You can turn this off, or delete every entry, in Profile → Privacy.
Question history (your device only) — your device remembers which questions you have already played, so the next game picks new ones first.

About us and welcome questions

The answers you give in the welcome questions and in About us (your name, your partner's name and the word you use for them, your status, how long you have been together, long distance, conversation style and what you want more of) stay on your device.
If you are linked, only your relationship stage and conversation style (worked out from those answers) and your question schedule are saved on the couple record. We also save a yes/no marker in your profile that you have seen these questions, so we do not ask again.

Notifications

Push tokens — if you allow notifications, an Expo push token and your time zone are stored in your profile so we can send Daily Thread notifications (for example, when your partner has answered) at the right time. Push tokens do not contain message content.
Reminders on your device — question reminders and anniversary reminders are scheduled on your device.

Purchases and entitlements

Purchase status — when you buy a chapter or Grace Days, RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt from Apple or Google, validates it, and returns your entitlement list to the app. We record which chapters you own so they stay unlocked, and a record of each Grace Day purchase we have credited so it is never credited twice.
We never see your payment details — card numbers, Apple ID and Google account details are handled entirely by Apple or Google and never touch our systems.
Grace Days balance — stored in your couple record so both partners can see the shared balance.

Sparks, look and preferences (your device only)

Sparks (achievements) — stored locally on your device only. Never leaves your phone.
Look — your choice of Classic or New look is stored on your device only.
Sound and haptic preferences — stored locally on your device.

Crash and performance data

Sentry — if the app crashes or hits an error, Sentry receives device, app and OS information, a stack trace, redacted breadcrumbs and your anonymous user ID. It also receives performance data for a sample of sessions, and when app sessions start and end. We scrub answers, names, codes, question text and similar content before events are sent.

For users of version 1.0.x

Earlier versions of Pique (1.0.x)

Versions 1.0.x of Pique also have two group games for friends, Roast Mode and Open Book. Version 2.0 does not include them. If you still use a 1.0.x version, this section applies to you as well as everything above.

Group game rooms (Roast Mode, Open Book)

Room data — when you host or join a room, we store the room code, player list, game state, your answers or roasts, and votes in Firebase Realtime Database. Every room has a two-hour expiry: the entire room, including every answer, roast and vote, is automatically deleted no later than two hours after it was created, by a scheduled cleanup job that runs every 30 minutes. Content cannot be recovered once a room is cleaned up.
Room content — the text you write (for example a roast or an Open Book answer) is shared with the other players in your room. Roasts are shown anonymously to the target; authorship is revealed after they guess. Friends can join from a web browser with the room code or link. No content is shared outside your room.
Content filter — text typed in Roast Mode and Open Book is checked by an automatic content filter. Messages with prohibited terms (for example slurs, threats of violence, or sexual terms involving minors) are blocked before they are sent.
Session history (your device only) — when a game ends, a derived summary (pack name, player count, score, duration and date) is saved on your device. No player names, no roast text and no answers are stored in session history. You can turn it off, or delete every entry, in Settings → Privacy.

Reporting abuse in a group game

If content in a room is abusive, threatening, discriminatory, sexually explicit, harassing, or otherwise violates our Terms, report it via Profile → Support in the app, which opens an email to hello@playpique.com. Include the room code, the approximate time and screenshots if you have them. The host can end the session at any time. We may remove access, disable accounts, or take other action where content violates the Terms.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your phone number or postal address.
We do not collect your location. We store only your time zone name (for example, Europe/London) so questions and notifications arrive at the right time.
We do not collect your real name, unless you use it as your display name or your Google or Apple account shares it when you sign in.
We do not collect device identifiers for advertising purposes.
We do not use advertising SDKs. There are no ads in Pique.
We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

Third-party services

Pique uses the following third parties. Each handles a specific piece of the product — nothing more.

Firebase (Google) — authentication, Firestore database (profiles, couples, reveals), Realtime Database (game rooms), Cloud Functions (server logic and AI scoring), Remote Config (remote settings), and related backend infrastructure. Firebase's privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
Sentry — crash and error monitoring and performance diagnostics, as described above. Sentry's privacy policy: sentry.io/privacy
Apple Sign-In and Google Sign-In — optional sign-in providers. Apple privacy: apple.com/legal/privacy. Google privacy: policies.google.com/privacy
Anthropic (Claude API — commercial product) — the text-format answers in Couples Journey are sent to Anthropic's API for one-shot scoring against your partner's answer. Before sending, we anonymise the prompt: your display name and your partner's display name are replaced with neutral labels ("Partner A", "Partner B"), and any [Name] placeholders in the question are replaced with a generic pronoun. Only the question and both answers reach Anthropic — no user identifiers. Anthropic retains API traffic for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes it (longer retention may apply where required by legal or abuse-policy obligations). Prompts and outputs are not used to train Anthropic's models on the commercial API. Anthropic's privacy policy: anthropic.com/privacy
RevenueCat — validates in-app purchase receipts from Apple and Google. Receives your anonymous user ID and the purchase receipt only. RevenueCat's privacy policy: revenuecat.com/privacy
Expo — app builds and over-the-air updates (EAS), and delivery of push notifications. To deliver a notification, Expo's push service receives your push token and the notification text (which may include your partner's display name). It never receives your answers. Data retention

Game rooms (Firebase) — Couples Journey rooms, two-phone game rooms and, in 1.0.x, Roast Mode and Open Book rooms all carry a two-hour expiry timestamp. A scheduled cleanup job runs every 30 minutes and permanently removes any expired room, including every answer, roast and vote.
Daily Thread answers (Firebase) — the scrambled answer copies in Firebase are temporary delivery copies. After both partners reveal, they are deleted after about 2 hours. If the reveal never completes, they are deleted after about 7 days. Reveal metadata (dates, streak state) may remain to support streak, history and delivery state.
On your device — Daily Thread history (up to 365 days), game history, question history, anniversary dates, Sparks and preferences stay until you delete the app or delete your account. You can also clear Daily Thread history and game history in Profile → Privacy.
AI scoring traffic (Anthropic) — up to 30 days on Anthropic's side for abuse monitoring, then deleted. We do not retain a copy of the anonymised prompts we send. The daily count of scoring requests is kept until you delete your account.
Couple record (including anniversary dates saved there) — stored until one of you disconnects or either account is deleted.
Your profile — stored until you delete your account, at which point it is permanently removed.
Purchase entitlements — held by RevenueCat and Apple/Google per their platforms. Deleting your app account does not refund past purchases; contact Apple/Google for refund requests.
Crash data (Sentry) — kept for Sentry's standard retention period.

Your rights

You have the right to:

Access a copy of your data — to receive a copy of the data we hold about you, email hello@playpique.com with the subject line "Data access request". We will respond within 30 days.
Correct your data — edit your display name and avatar from Profile, and your About us answers and anniversary dates in the app, at any time.
Delete your account — in the app, go to Profile → Delete Account. Outside the app, you can request deletion at playpique.com/delete-account or by emailing hello@playpique.com. Account deletion removes your account, profile, Daily Thread couple link (including anniversary dates saved on it), associated Thread reveal records and your account's data on that device. Active game room data may remain briefly until the room expires and is removed by scheduled cleanup. Purchase records may continue to be retained by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat as required for transaction history, refunds, fraud prevention, tax, and legal compliance.
Right to portability, restriction, objection, and to withdraw consent — you can ask us to provide your data in a machine-readable format, restrict our processing, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent for permissions you previously granted (notifications, camera, photo library). Right to complain — if you are in the UK or EU/EEA you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).

Legal bases for processing

We process account, profile, game, purchase, and support data to provide the App under our contract with you; to maintain security, prevent abuse, and diagnose bugs under our legitimate interests; to comply with legal obligations for purchases and platform requirements; and, where required, based on your consent for optional permissions such as notifications, camera, and photo library access.

AI scoring of Couples Journey text answers is automated processing used for entertainment / game scoring only; it does not produce decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on you.

Data controller

Pique is operated by an individual sole trader based in the United Kingdom. You can contact the data controller at hello@playpique.com. If you require a postal address for a regulatory or legal request, please email us and we will provide one.

Age

Pique is not for children. You must be at least 17 years old to use Pique, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has created an account, please contact hello@playpique.com and we will delete the account and associated data.

Data location and international transfers

Pique uses Firebase (Google) and other processors that may store and process your data in the United States, the EU, or other regions. Where data is transferred from the UK / EU / EEA to a country that the UK / EU does not consider to provide an equivalent level of data protection, we rely on appropriate safeguards including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, as offered and maintained by our processors. Details of each processor's transfer safeguards are available in the privacy policies linked above.

Security

We use Firebase Authentication, Firestore security rules, and Realtime Database rules to restrict access to your data. Daily Thread answers are scrambled on your device before they leave your phone, and security rules limit access to you and your partner. No system is perfectly secure; if you suspect your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the app evolves or the law changes. Material changes will be announced in the app and posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
