Privacy Policy
Last updated: 02 May 2026
Pique ("we", "our", "us") is a social app for couples and friend groups. It offers Daily Thread (a question-a-day between partners), Couples Journey (paired quiz packs), and group games including Roast Mode and Open Book. This policy explains what data we collect, why, how long we keep it, and your rights.
Summary
- We collect the minimum needed to run the app — your display name, avatar, and game state.
- We do not collect your email for marketing, location, advertising identifiers, or anything about you beyond what the features require.
- We never sell your data.
- You can export or delete your account at any time from within the app.
What we collect
Identity and sign-in
- Anonymous account — created automatically on first launch via Firebase Authentication. This is a random ID used to associate your game data with you. No personal identity attached.
- Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In (optional) — if you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, we receive a unique identifier from that provider. We do not use your email address for marketing. If your sign-in provider shares an email, Firebase Authentication may store it solely so you can sign back in with the same account.
- Display name and avatar — chosen by you during setup. Stored in your Firebase profile document so your partner and group members can see them.
- Avatar photo (optional) — if you upload a profile photo, it is stored as a small compressed image in your Firebase profile. Not shared outside the people you link or play with.
Daily Thread (couple feature)
- Couple link — when you link with a partner, we store a "couple record" containing both your identifiers, display names, avatars, schedule, streak count, and Grace Days balance.
- Your daily answer — your own answer is stored locally on your device for the current day. A copy, encrypted on your device before upload, is written to Firebase so your partner's device can decrypt and display it during the reveal. The server cannot read your answer — only devices that hold the couple's shared key can.
- Reveal history — dates where both partners answered and the reveal was opened are stored locally on your device for up to 365 days so your History screen can show past Q&A pairs. You can clear it by deleting your account.
- Push notification tokens — if you enable notifications, an Expo push token is stored in your user profile/presence document so we can send reminders and partner / game / thread notifications. Push tokens do not contain message content.
Group games (Roast Mode, Open Book, Couples Quiz)
- Room data — when you host or join a room, we store the room code, player list, game state, your answers or roasts, and votes in Firebase Realtime Database. Every room has a two-hour expiry: the entire room including every answer and roast is automatically deleted no later than two hours after it was created, by a scheduled cleanup job that runs every 30 minutes.
- Room content — the text you write (e.g. a roast, an Open Book answer) is shared with the other players in your room via Firebase. Roasts are shown anonymously to the target; authorship is revealed after they guess. No content is shared outside your room.
- Session history (local device only) — when a game ends, a derived summary — pack name, player count (not names), score, duration, and played-at timestamp — is written to your own device's local storage so the History tab can list your past games. No player names, no roast text, no answers, and no user-generated content are stored in session history. You can turn off this local history completely in Settings → Privacy ("Save game history on this device"), and you can delete every past entry from the same screen.
Purchases and entitlements
- Purchase status — when you buy a pack or Grace Day, RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt from Apple or Google, validates it, and returns your entitlement list to the app. We record which packs you own so they stay unlocked.
- We never see your payment details — card numbers, Apple ID, Google account details are handled entirely by Apple or Google and never touch our systems.
- Grace Days count — stored in your couple record so both partners can see the shared balance.
Sparks and preferences
- Sparks (achievements) — stored locally on your device only. Never leaves your phone.
- Sound and haptic preferences — stored locally on your device.
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your email address, phone number, or real name (unless you voluntarily put your real name as your display name).
- We do not collect your location.
- We do not collect device identifiers for advertising purposes.
- We do not use advertising SDKs. There are no ads in Pique.
- We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Third-party services
Pique uses the following third parties. Each handles a specific piece of the product — nothing more.
- Firebase (Google) — authentication, Firestore database (profiles, couples, reveals), Realtime Database (game rooms), Cloud Functions (server logic and AI scoring), Remote Config, and related backend infrastructure. Firebase's privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Sentry — crash and error monitoring + performance diagnostics. We scrub user answers, roasts, names, invite codes, question text, and similar content before events are sent. Sentry may receive device / app / OS information, redacted breadcrumbs, stack traces, and an anonymous Firebase user ID. Sentry's privacy policy: sentry.io/privacy
- Apple Sign-In and Google Sign-In — optional auth providers. Apple privacy: apple.com/legal/privacy. Google privacy: policies.google.com/privacy
- Anthropic (Claude API — commercial product) — the text-format answers in Couples Journey are sent to Anthropic's API for one-shot scoring against your partner's answer. Before sending, we anonymise the prompt: your display name and your partner's display name are replaced with neutral labels ("Partner A", "Partner B"), and any
[Name] placeholders in the question are replaced with a generic pronoun. Only the question and both answers reach Anthropic — no user identifiers. Anthropic retains API traffic for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes it (longer retention may apply where required by legal or abuse-policy obligations). Prompts and outputs are not used to train Anthropic's models on the commercial API. Anthropic's privacy policy: anthropic.com/privacy
- RevenueCat — validates in-app purchase receipts from Apple and Google. Receives your anonymous user ID and the purchase receipt only. RevenueCat's privacy policy: revenuecat.com/privacy
- Expo (EAS) — provides app build and over-the-air update infrastructure. Does not access your in-app data. Expo's privacy policy: expo.dev/privacy
Data retention
- Group game room data (Firebase) — every room carries a two-hour expiry timestamp. A scheduled cleanup job runs every 30 minutes and permanently removes any expired room — including every answer, roast, and vote. Content cannot be recovered once a room is cleaned up.
- Local session history (your device) — derived summaries only (no names, no answers, no roasts). Persists until you delete the app, delete your account, tap "Delete all game history" in Settings → Privacy, or turn off "Save game history on this device" (which only affects new games).
- Daily Thread reveals (Firebase) — encrypted Daily Thread answer copies in Firebase are temporary delivery copies. After both partners reveal, encrypted answer fields are scheduled for deletion after about 2 hours. If only one partner answers and the reveal never completes, encrypted answer fields are scheduled for deletion after about 7 days. Reveal metadata (dates, streak state) may remain to support streak, history, and delivery state. Local history remains on your device until you delete it, delete the app, or delete your account.
- Daily Thread local answers (your device) — up to 365 days of your own answers are cached locally for the History tab. Cleared when you tap "Delete all Daily Thread history" in Settings → Privacy, delete the app, or delete your account.
- AI scoring traffic (Anthropic) — up to 30 days on Anthropic's side for abuse monitoring, then deleted. We do not retain a copy of the anonymised prompts we send.
- Couple record — stored until one of you disconnects the thread or either account is deleted.
- Your profile — stored until you delete your account, at which point it is permanently removed.
- Purchase entitlements — held by RevenueCat and Apple/Google per their platforms. Deleting your app account does not refund past purchases; contact Apple/Google for refund requests.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access a copy of your data — to receive a copy of the data we hold about you, email hello@playpique.com with the subject line "Data access request". We will respond within 30 days.
- Correct your data — edit your display name and avatar from the Profile screen at any time.
- Delete your account — use Delete Account in the Privacy screen inside the app. Outside the app, you can request deletion at playpique.com/delete-account or by emailing hello@playpique.com. Account deletion removes your account, profile, local app data, Daily Thread couple link, and associated Thread reveal records. Active group-game room data may remain briefly until the room expires and is removed by scheduled cleanup. Purchase records may continue to be retained by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat as required for transaction history, refunds, fraud prevention, tax, and legal compliance.
- Right to portability, restriction, objection, and to withdraw consent — you can ask us to provide your data in a machine-readable format, restrict our processing, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent for permissions you previously granted (notifications, camera, photo library). Email hello@playpique.com.
- Right to complain — if you are in the UK or EU/EEA you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).
- Contact us — with any data question at hello@playpique.com.
Legal bases for processing
We process account, profile, game, purchase, and support data to provide the App under our contract with you; to maintain security, prevent abuse, and diagnose bugs under our legitimate interests; to comply with legal obligations for purchases and platform requirements; and, where required, based on your consent for optional permissions such as notifications, camera, and photo library access.
AI scoring of Couples Journey text answers is automated processing used for entertainment / game scoring only; it does not produce decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Data controller
Pique is operated by an individual sole trader based in the United Kingdom. You can contact the data controller at hello@playpique.com. If you require a postal address for a regulatory or legal request, please email us and we will provide one.
Children's privacy
Pique is rated 17+ on the App Store because of the Unfiltered intensity option in Roast Mode and is not intended for users under 17. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has created an account, please contact hello@playpique.com and we will delete the account and associated data.
Data location and international transfers
Pique uses Firebase (Google) and other processors that may store and process your data in the United States, the EU, or other regions. Where data is transferred from the UK / EU / EEA to a country that the UK / EU does not consider to provide an equivalent level of data protection, we rely on appropriate safeguards including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, as offered and maintained by our processors. Details of each processor's transfer safeguards are available in the privacy policies linked above.
Security
We use Firebase Authentication, Firestore security rules, and Realtime Database rules to restrict access to your data. Daily Thread answers are encrypted on your device before they leave your phone — the server cannot decrypt them; only a device that holds the couple's shared key can. No system is perfectly secure; if you suspect your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as the app evolves or the law changes. Material changes will be announced in the app and posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
